Cruel Mercy - Snape Poem by ~sindie11:iconsindie11:

Cruel Mercy (Snape Poem)

If there is to be one mercy in this life,
Then don't be so cruel, Death.
Don't hold off another minute,
Keeping me waiting on this barren earth,
So filled with pestilence and riddled with hatred.
God knows I have enough of both in my own bitter heart,
And like the coward everyone calls me,
It is easier to be so cruel,
So you and I understand each other quite well, Death.
Be like an old friend,
One with green eyes and fiery hair
Whose angelic ghost is imprinted on my mind's
Deepest recesses, haunting the shadows there.
Perhaps I have tried to push the ancient memories away
And delude myself into thinking it all a mocking dream
Of something too pure and good for one such as me.
Time then drags for an eternity and passes in an instant...
Death, you are knocking now as silvery tendrils
Of those memories fall away from me
And my life bleeds out,
And there are those green eyes,
And I am left wondering:
How cruel can mercy be?

It's been a while since I wrote poetry or really anything for that matter, but this came to me last night in a short bout of inspiration. It's about Severus Snape, of course!

Really? :)

It's incredible how powerful can be the feelings we can have about his death. And about his life.

'And delude myself into thinking it all a mocking dream Of something too pure and good for one such as me.'...Yes. A whisper, a last breath and I shiver, for a fictional character who's so beautiful I sometimes wonder if JKR knew how much what she created was powerful or if it's only me who's definitely mad about it again.

I'm haunted by this last year at Hogwarts. I know, at the first sight, it's just a few lines in a book, with a character playing the double agent. But when I think about him, I feel so sad and impressed. He's incredible.

Thank you for the poem.
:)

I totally agree with you. I don't think JKR ever imagined she would wind up inventing a character like Snape, who is so complex and adored by many fans.

Do you know of any fanfics where Snape is the headmaster during that last year?

I imagine that year was the worst for him, especially without Dumbledore (despite having his portrait).

Thanks for the comment and for faving! :)

She probably could not imagine how much the character would be so deep and interesting for us. That's a pity indeed - the fact that Severus Snape doesn't have enough visibility, apart from in the fandom itself. I mean, the character is so multilayered that he deserves to be known as a great literary figure, in my opinion.
Well, we'd confort themselves with the thought that celebrity isn't everything...

Of course I'd like to read more fics of the last year at Hogwarts. Really, Snape in his last year is fascinating...And I'd like to read about people's reactions to the news of his death and loyalty to the Good side.

I haven't read yet, I want to...

The last year is very interesting - he let go all what was important before - recognition, respect, hope of protecting Harry, and learns more and more about human nature, all keeping walking on a very thin rope between the two sides of abysses, still standing for the idea of not letting it to be in vain, protecting who despises him, working on defeating what ruined his life - Voldemort and his own mistakes etc. The character is tragic and beautiful, I regret he remains generally the comical potions teacher of a children's book for the other people (and the movies don't help here, I'd say).

Oh, thanks so much for the rec! I read two of the entries last night: The Sword of Gryffindor and AU to DH Chapter 30. Both great! :)

Check out her fic recs:

I read One More Such Victory, Snape's Return, War Dead, and Wake to Sleep.

So many great fics out there!

Anyway, I totally agree with your assessment of Snape's last year. What a hard time that was for him! :( I think the movies do make him look too comical at times, yes.

Cool, thanks for the suggestion. I hope I'll find time to read very soon. I hope too that these are not anti-canon fics. I'm not against fanon but I'd like to read more authors who understand the beauty, strength and tragedy of the canon DH Snape :)
:iconsindie11:
I'm pretty sure these fics are canon!

I love this! Beautifully written - and it fits my present state! ;)
